Craig of Craig’s list has been anti sponsor and I could be wrong but anti cash in. People reaching out to people directly amost at the level of barter. Done with the above reservations its not and ad or sponsor thing. Its a support forum. MaidSAFE does it already with annoncements for its collaborative software development. But a revenue generating element? How does Craig’s list do it?
I didn’t come at it from a revenue thing.
I just came at it from the perspective of me to you type ads e.g. who wants to design my logo or sell me some star trek figurines type of deal. Many forums do it, it’s not a new thing.
Listen.
Your talking about it as if we are discussing allowing a cute but rabies infested dog into the house mate.
Classifieds are as old as time itself.
Its just advertising and we already do it on the forum. I purchases some MS coin off of one of the guys recently and will probably be doing it again.
On with it.
As long as its not ads or advertising. I think Craig Newmark hit the right balance. I think his approach is totally anti sponsorship, which is the right way because you lose your liberty over sponsorship and become the property of bankers over it literally. Also not cool when it becomes a search for a new overlord employer board. The advance of power parity relationships is one thing, with cooperatives and collaboratives etc., but having IBM and Haliburton sniping?
No actually, I’d argue that you are advocating letting a “potentially” rabid dog into the house, based entirely on it’s “cuteness”.
Like I said.If it ain’t broke, why fix it?
Nope…
Lol…whatever, I don’t care enough to get further embroiled in defending a “Don’t do it” position…which was not my intent…lol
DON’T DO IT!!!…NOOOOOOOooooooo…lol
If someone is looking for a Dev to help him build a site for SAFE or an App for SAFE, it is possible to start a topic in “Apps” and ask for it. It’s also possible to say: “Send me a PM if you’re interested, I’m willing to pay x Safecoin for it”.
What do we get more if we create a classifieds section? Wouldn’t that be the same??
I think calling it a classified section seems to be misleading. How about “Help Wanted / Offered”.
Classifieds implies advertising of the broadest kind and may attract spammers searching for places for more general advertising. We could limit this by not showing up in such searches.
I’m still concerned about the extra moderation, so I’d like that the purpose, naming and guidelines for the category to try and minimise this. Moderation involves a lot of time and energy, and we are frequently stretched, so this is an important consideration.
Do It Now
Regarding “do it now / don’t discuss” and “this isn’t a moderator decision”…
Firstly, my comment was personal, not a moderator comment (you’ll see a different colour background when someone is responding as moderator, like this post).
Secondly, I completely agree that this isn’t a moderator decision. My point was that it should be a community decision for the reasons I gave.
If the community don’t want moderation of course, we can just act on any suggestion made by anyone without regard for what the other members think. But the community does want moderation, and as moderators, what we do is try our best to act according to what the community wants.
That means we don’t make significant changes to the forum without considering what the implications might be, or giving the community a chance to express their views in it.
We can’t go shoving off topic posts into a backwater just because a couple of members (no names ;-)) suggest it, and I think adding a classified sections is off similar significance.
“Just do it” amounts to no consultation, and that isn’t compatible with us trying to act in behalf of all members, as best we can.
I Want
Anyone who wants significant changes, new categories, changes to moderation etc needs to get support from the community. Demanding it be done because in your opinion it won’t do harm, is just your opinion.
As a moderator I want your opinion, and I want to see what others think too. And as a forum member, I want to be able to express my opinion.
We shove them to the correct Off-topic category don’t we?
I’d not do it for this reason myself - rather for being “off-topic”.
of similar significance yes…but an entirely different kettle of fish I’d say…Just sayin’ and agree with the rest.
He’s gotten our support already, so why do you keep saying this? How many of us does it need before we give it a shot? 100 likes?
He’s gotten our support so can we please give it a shot?
There are also a few negative responses, like said before by others this is something that needs more consideration than just doing it and see where we end.
Just as a community member I’m not supportive so far. I’d asked some questions if you scroll higher, feel free to answer them and convince me that we need a category like that. Maybe I’ll change my mind. Maybe not.
I see mixed views, on the initial proposal, but other concerns and suggestions that have not been addressed. So to me it’s not clear.
I’ve asked for more specifics so the moderators team can consider the impact it may have in our work load. We might also like to suggest ways of reducing that. To me this is still not thought through, so I’m not sure it’s fair to say there is consensus in favour of it.
Maybe you and/or @goindeep would like to create poll - but for that you need to say exactly what you have in mind - and if you want a new category, you will need someone to decide what is and isn’t OK in the category, and how that is to be managed. It would be best to sort that out before the poll, and include it to help people decide, because it will have to be done by someone.
If your answer is, no guidelines, no moderation, for the category, just say that, so people will know what they are voting on. If not, I think you need to be more specific than “create a category”.
Ohhhhhhh my God.
Mate this isn’t the house of lords. Just get on with it already.
You’ve been asked to give some specifics, without them the proposal can’t be considered properly. Nobody is going to implement it just because you feel that’s the way we need to handle things here. So, try to give some more details (or someone else if they feel like it) or let’s close this topic.
Hmmm nah.
And i’ll tell you why.
It is common sense.
If I have to explain everything that should come as common sense, then I’d prefer to remove myself completely. If the community (mods actually) can’t think for themselves and need someone to spell out basic things than I’m sorry, id prefer to just sit on the sidelines and watch as I dont have the competency to explain such simple things which should be easily understood by anyone of sound mind.
We can’t just simply change things on the forum because 1 or 2 person(s) here would like to see it without consideration, explanation and specifics. If you can’t understand that we want more information than: 'Just do it", “Just implement it” than we won’t come any further here.
