We know dog will get brought to heel re its behaviour towards new commands, whats hassling me right now is trying to get a spentbook node running on comnet.

Totally agreed. We can try to remove the generation of random keypairs currently done. I think if we do that, then commands with need of write access will fail (and we can properly advise users how to solve it) whilst read-only commands can still work…
