🌑 Dimitar Reliability Tracker - 7 Days Since Last Incident

Overview

This topic tracks how many consecutive days the Autonomi Network has operated without any data loss or inaccessibility.
It serves as a simple, transparent indicator of network reliability and confidence for both community members and external observers.

The color icon in the title shows the current reliability level:

  • :new_moon: Under 500 days — Needs attention
  • :last_quarter_moon: 500–1000 days — Stable but being monitored
  • :full_moon: Over 1000 days — Excellent reliability and confidence

Purpose

This thread acts as a public confidence barometer for Autonomi — a quick, easy-to-follow indicator for anyone who doesn’t read the forum daily but wants to stay informed about the network’s reliability.

:speech_balloon: How it works

  • The uptime count is updated periodically by the community.
  • If any verified data loss occurs, the counter resets to zero and the indicator turns red.
  • Recovery back above thresholds (500 or 1000 days) changes the indicator color.

Scoring like this is beyond disingenuous. Data loss and inaccessibility are not synonymous. No data networks have ever gone 500 consecutive days without any accessibility issues. Data loss is also strictly pass or fail. There are no circumstances where there is any level of acceptability.

What would be the acceptable levels of data loss/inaccessibility for the different tracker levels in your opinion?

For the test data set we have over 90% loss or inaccessibility for example.

I’m absolutely not the guy to ask, but I would consider any kind of failure that results in the perpetual inability to retrieve provably stored data / permanent data loss as a critical failure worthy of a complete and total reset as it pertains to reliability. Not sure how we would even come back from that though. As for accessibility, I can imagine different scenarios whereby we have reliability issues but data permanence is still there. Case in point, Southside’s Discord archives for David, Bux and Jim are all there but I can only access the Bux archive at the moment. Not sure what the issue is there but would not consider the inaccessibility of the other two archives as a network failure or data loss. Surely smarter individuals will be able to, but data loss seems like a way bigger deal.

What exactly does this mean?

chunk not found [Record could not be found.]

The requested piece of data cannot be found - it is not there at all (data loss) or the network does not know where it is currently (inaccessibility).

The measure Dimitar has put together seems very clear and not deceptive at all.

Of course, recommending improvements is a good thing, but accusing Dimitar of deception as a first comment on this after he’s putting something useful out there that took effort seems harsh & probably wrong. I certainly don’t see dishonesty here but the opposite; this makes a clear record of data loss and accessibility issues on the network visible.

Without this, if the issue is fixed, 100 days later visitors to the forum may be unaware there were ever issues. This logs them so people know the deal. Seems helpful & truthful to me.

The target for the network should be zero data loss, but if any loss ever is fatal, then it’s pretty hard to get started.

As long as data loss is increasingly rare in the long term, and data can be re-uploaded for free, the network can still be far better than Bittorrent in terms of data retention and accessibility, and Bittorrent is the most successful P2P network in existence.

I do feel a Bittorrent-like caching / backup layer to Autonomi where any participating nodes can seed any downloaded files they want to & automatically re-upload to Autonomi if loss is detected could be helpful as a 2nd layer to ensure important files are always available.

That could make diagnosing and detecting data loss harder because it’d be self-healing, and hopefully it won’t be needed in time, but it would probably have avoided the current data in accessibility / loss issue.

54 posts were merged into an existing topic: Nov 4 Update from Bux

It is exactly right that the community (a third party) should be validating the stability of the network, based on evidence.

The network is open source and not run by Maidsafe, as recent Discord messages have underlined. Maidsafe are obviously the primary (sole?) dev team behind the core code, but it is our collective responsibility to maintain and support a healthy network.

I agree that wording is important, as are the duration lengths though.

Maybe a log scale, with shorter periods ramping up would be more useful, e.g. 32, 64, 128, 256, days, etc.

Also, data inaccessible would seem more appropriate until it is confirmed lost (or appears lost after an extended period)?

I worry that sometimes community fears are not heard.

Many of the community have suggested removing payments in the old release could lead to massive churn. In addition, it leaves the network vulnerable to a bad version rolling out without ample time to observe its behavior.

Moreover, a public test net has been suggested to bed new versions in, to help deployment safety.

Then there is the emissions issue, which in part drives fast upgrades when the tokens stop. This is human nature for folks only in it for the reward or are unable to subsidise nodes without it. Pleading for folks to upgrade slowly is insufficient, imo.

If a combination of the above has led to issues, I hope they are not ignored going forward. Even if the issue is short term, it isn’t a good look on the team or the network.

The community is largely trying to advise and help. Sometimes that comes in the form of putting up a mirror to reflect the results of action/inaction. I hope the network recovers and grows stronger as a result.

We can launch multiple trackers from different third parties and people can follow the tracker they like, finding it most adequate for their purposes. I am renaming this tracker to Dimitar Reliability Tracker :dragon:

As I’ve mentioned on Discord, this is being worked on. It might be in place for testing Merkle Tree payments. We just need a bit of time.

It actually wouldn’t have helped in this case though.

We are also working on an self-updating mechanism.

Thanks, @chriso .

It’s good to hear a public test network is being worked on. It may not catch all issues, but it helps with staging a roll out.

For auto-updates, that is also good to hear. However, if economic incentives lead to immediate upgrades being preferable, node runners may still restart manually ASAP. Moreover, I hope any automatic updates are over a prolonged (perhaps configurable) period. As I’m sure you’re aware, automatic roll outs can also be catastrophic, if a bad/buggy version self-deploys widely.

Regardless, we are where we are right now. This thread serves as a reflection of that position. I’m sure other solutions can and will be presented to improve the situation going forward.

I added all 123 files that I uploaded between October 2 and November 13 to my test list. When I tried to download them, it turned out that the latest incident also affected files from November 7 — likely due to the ongoing node upgrade on that date.

Between October 2 and November 7, I uploaded 104 files, 92 (88.46%) of which are currently inaccessible or lost. Since November 8, there have been no losses among confirmed successfully uploaded files.

Added 3 files to the test list after the incident. Downloading successfully, but I had to upload them with a different Ethereum address. From the previous Ethereum address I was getting errors.

I shared it with Nic in the Discord support channel:

I tried to upload the log file to the network, I paid successfully, but I get errors. I also tried deleting bootstrap_cache but with the same unsuccessful result. Here is a log from that too:

The payment was successful on the blockchain.

I made 2 more attempts to pay for the same files - the first time ANT sent to 13 addresses, the second to 5 addresses, the third to 4 addresses. In all attempts, the upload was unsuccessful with the above errors

According to what we have been told, 0.4% of the data has been lost, but most of the files prior to the incident have been lost.

As most of them were not very large and only used three chunks, something does not add up for me.

Maybe the scanning doesn’t progress evenly? Maybe the parts of the network that have lost the data are also harder to reach with the scanning. Or something like that.

So all in here are working? If so let’s get them on SAFE-FS App v3

I will add everything I upload to SAFE-FS with descriptions as soon as possible. Maybe you could add the ability to upload lists instead of adding them file by file?
