I am sure some are. Perhaps as this whole phenomenon of crowdfunding through the presale of digital assets matures there will be ways to seperate the entitled from the not so entitled. :wink:

counterparty and sidechains have very little overlap with maidsafe.

meganet, bittorent would be more of a competitor to storj and siacoin

maybe that bittorent project but i’m not super familiar with it? does it have a coin to do resource allocation management?

Of course it does, not directly sure, but it absolutely affects the nature of the development. Firstly the market price is reflected on what the devs own themselves, which is probably significant (they believe in it enough to work full time on it - probably bought up lots of MAID).

Secondly, a higher MAID price is good for the whole network, surely you wouldn’t argue it’s not? From the core developers to the app developers to the original investors to future investors to the network users.

And of course they’re not starving and don’t seem to be begging for nickels at your local crypto-hold yet. If they raised $20,000,000 I don’t think they would have gone “Oh hey sweet now we can all pay ourselves triple what we were going to”. David mentioned they’re okay with funds for the time being.

If Maidsafe Ltd ran out of money and the developers were working for free, then yeah I’d be really pissed off and would do whatever it took to get them a salary, but that doesn’t seem like it’ll happen.

From what I’ve read, BitTorrent’s Project Maelstrom doesn’t have a monteziation aspect, so no coin. Basically their concept involves packaging websites into torrents, which are accessed from peers via a modified browser. While it’s decentralized, I don’t think it’s anonymous or open source.

There’s also Zeronet, Freenet and I2p. I think Freenet is the most similar to Maidsafe.

I’m referring to a comment made by @dirvine about software defined radio in the context of hardware for maidsafe. What it showed me was that he and presumably the team are fully cognizant that this might take > a decade to “complete” and that like all good software projects, this one will never, ever be finished. Look at linux: It’s absolutely not finished!

Windows, too for that matter.
Microsoft Office, same camp
MacOS, ditto
Android, yep

Good code doesn’t get finished. it gets used, and evolves based on user feedback. This is the reigning “best way to build software.”

I see Blackphone 1 (NVIDIA i500) is very cheap now…not sure how well Silent OS is supported on it currently.

I assume the Tegra Android Development Pack 3.0r3 is not enough to reprogram the i500 radio for mesh connectivity, guessing that would be chip level, closed source. Know any chineses that can get it :wink:

Talking to the modem

The open at_pal socket is associated with the now-discontinued Icera modem from Nvidia; it interacts with several applications on Blackphone, including the agps_daemon. The daemon – a privileged process that accesses the system and radio features on Blackphone – listens on the at_pal sockets and writes everything it receives to the command line. Attackers can take advantage of this by sending commands to initiate actions such as sending SMS messages without saving a copy to history, muting the phone so that users won’t hear the ringing, dialing numbers to initiate calls, finding and connected to neighboring cell towers, killing the modem, or preventing incoming calls by forwarding them to another number.

“We’ve found a way to talk directly to the modem!” Strazzere wrote.

Potential attack vectors include tricking users into downloading and installing malicious apps that take control of the modem. Attackers could also potentially use maliciously crafted emails in a manner similar to the way Stagefright could compromise an Android device, Strazzere said. The attacker would succeed by using higher privileges available to the application (such as agps_daemon), so it’s important to understand what capabilities an app should have.

I don’t entirely agree but I do think that people claiming ownership is important so whichever way that ownership manifests is fine.

What alternative would you suggest? If not the crowdsale, then what system would have worked better, or what changes would you have made to the crowdsale?
