The token is essential to the network and enable so many cool things to be done: paid app development; paid core updates; paid contribution of disk space; in app payments (with micro-transactions). Not only that but Safecoin is the best iteration of digital money/transfer of value yet conceived IMO.
The SAFE network is better than free - it’s frickin airbnb for your hard drive and pays you to use it!
To understand with a degree of confidence the plausibility of the SAFE network I think you’d need a very high level of technical competence in mathematics, programming, networks, crypto currency (and probably shit loads more areas TBH). At some point (for most people) you have to judge for yourself whether you trust the expert opinions of the people you listen to. What company they keep? How they come across? What are their motives? etc. etc. So far I’ve been very personally impressed with all the noises I hear coming out of the team at maidsafe, the SAFE pods and the community of the SAFE project as a whole. Of course I know this is in some ways a moon shot, creating a whole new awesome internet structure FFS(!!), but we did actually land on the moon so who knows

It seems the author has a chip on his shoulder (quite negative and ‘nothing will work’ attitude), as if he missed an investment opportunity in the past, or made a few bad business decisions with a related platform, and is now seeing MaidSAFE gain noteriety. He can’t get over his bitter feelings about his own path. The positive from this thread for me is that I know to avoid that mailing list.
