Well I have my robot (Albert) I built back in 2012, but stopped as I could not get the brain working (it’e 3 raspberry pi’s and 4 Arduino’s) . So push for neuroevolution there. Now LLMs and more have given that a start. So in negotiations with unitree for an edu version of their dog and humanoid and that project will start again

Then the car with no moving parts stuff (of course)

Pus about a million magnets of all shapes and sizes for electricity generation and tests with that.

An insane amount of electronics parts and sensors for all kinds of cheap automita, they are just weird experiments

Then the wood lathe and bandsaw and all the welding equipment etc.

The goal is think of anything → build anything

and @dirvine I would like to remind you that many of our age were promised jetpacks.
We may be a little vague about just who promised us jetpacks but it definitely happened.

So if you could move jetpacks to fairly near the top of your list, all us boomers will be most appreciative.

That not a workshop, it’s a hackspace!

I’m tempted to send a pic of my tool cupboard as a contrast

Yours reminded me of Clint’s in Gran Torino. Mine is more The Borrowers.

Yea, we did actually with the maidsafe foundation create the first Fab Lab in Scotland. That was the same idea. But now I am trying to do similar and I had hoped to teach people Engineering, but zero time, literally zero time to get into the workshop. I hope that changes next year and then really push ahead with many projects in parallel.

It’s sad but some investors would co crazy if they thought I worked on anything else. I have had many accusations over the years, told I was owned and had to only work 100% of waking hours on maidsafe (only by a tiny few investors mind you), which was cool, that’s what I was doing, but to get some freedom to move is so appealing to me now and to get out and build again. That will be heaven

I am excited by people being able to build and be motivated to be curious. Even the foundation (the maidsafe foundation from years back) is doing great stuff and on launch wil do much more. I don’t know if I posted the video of them recently, but here it is again if I haven’t (my head is mush these days, but it will get back to normal soonish I hope)

I am quite proud of what they are doing, I want to see much much more though (their site is https://maidsafe.foundation)
And here’s their wee update

Just good people doing good things. I love it :raised_hands:

Looks like its a little cleaner than when i saw it and a tad more built out. And looks like a shelf you built for Albert, from memory it was on the bench with the controllable elastic as muscles.

That’s brilliant. I wish I had summer camp activities like that when I was a kid! Hope the foundation goes from strength to strength & inspires loads of kids to create & build.

I’m not prone to jealousy, but that’s an enviable workshop!

Is “Albert” an acronym for something? Artificial Life Bot, Essentially Repurposed Toaster?

David, I know it may be a moot point with AI now but I am hoping you might consider adding to your list an AI moderated blinded decision making system for a different kind of organization. Make it nonprofit with no owners/shareholders-board-executives-managers-supervisors. Give every member the power of a director but call them “members”. I know there will be specialization based on appetite, interest and aptitude/insight/inspiration but lets finally throw out all the unnecessary elephants in the room.

For initial funding these can draw on grants (with less strings) loans from credit unions based on the same arrangement, a new kind of long term bond market tuned to this kind of risk, crowd sourcing- interest free loans from angels… but never ‘investors’ owners or stock markets! And let these where possible at every level always work with similar ethical and conflict of interest minimized organizations.

We have to stop covering over impossible ultimately unworkable conflicts of interest in conflations like claiming money in the context of speech is speech and not obvious bribery
and a clear attempt to protect bribery with law to usher in oligarchy. Or claiming we can own organizations when we can’t own people. We have to defeat stupid malignant elitism.
